Kids conversation classes
ages 7 and over
NB I have had numerous requests to teach children younger than 7yrs at the Centre, unfortunately this is not possible due to the insurance regulations. I can however arrange to teach a group of younger children at an alternative venue if required, but the venue should be organised by the parents/carers. jANE REED IS fully CRB checked.
Spanish conversation for Kids 7 YEARS+
NB these courses don't work well with less than six learners in the group therefore, the course will run when a minimum of six learners have registered - bring your friends!
Anyone interested in knowing more about the benefits of early language learning can click on the link www.primarylanguages.org.uk where more information is available.
GCSE Spanish, French
Always a good idea to get some revision in if you can, but you can't go wrong with a weekly conversation class to improve your confidence to speak out loud. Bring your friends and make it your hobby. Successful GCSE learners have improved here from predicted D grades to A* success.
Courses can be tailored to suit your needs as individuals. If it is for improving your grades, or building confidence in speaking, this is the place to be. Learners will work towards the GCSE exam, particularly the spoken unit.
Full payment is due on the day of the first lesson - please arrive early to register
GCSE Conversational Spanish and French
These classes are for anyone interested in keeping up or improving their level. It's good to talk, as it increases confidence. We will converse on various topics over a six-week period. Please call to discuss your requirements.
NB Learners must have studied the language for at least two years, as a conversation class requires some foundation knowledge.

Taking part in the European Day of Languages on 27 September ?
Let's join forces and celebrate together? If you are a language teacher, and would like to take part, please contact me at the Centre for further details
I am currently organising activities with a school in Portugal, Lithuania and Finland and Germany, to promote English in Europe. They, in turn, will promote their own language over in other countries.
My language students have written letters to the schools telling them about how we prepare for Christmas in the UK. They have made an animated film of their take on the festivities.
Another fantastic collaboration with our European partners.

Results!
Success! We had a great time collaborating with all the schools and intend to keep in touch.
3rd October 2010
It was a brilliant time of collaboration and communication over the internet and by snail mail between England, Portugal, Norway and Lithuania! All the students who participated are studying either Spanish or English or both!
I prepared a Presentation by Powerpoint, advertising the lovely Derbyshire countryside and Chatsworth House, along with little history and a poem by Lord Byron. Apparently, it all went down very well. The teachers and the students enjoyed hearing an English accent and were delighted to learn about the stunning area in which I live.
The UK snail mail was particularly effective in bringing me an enormous bar of Finnish chocolate - (nicer than Swiss!), along with some maps and general tourist information about Helsinki, which is very interesting, as it is not somewhere I have ever been, nor researched. Thank you Marja - English and Spanish Tutor in Finland.
The video from Portugal however, was not downloadable on my PC, so I don't know what to expect from there. But they are sending a hard copy through the post on DVD. Watch this space. Thanks to Barbara and her colleagues in Portugal for all her help and enthusiasm in making this happen.
Finally, thanks to my Language Centre students for their contribution of a couple of letters to explain how they were finding learning Spanish in England - they were very positive. Also, thanks to my English students who spent a few moments deliberating the fantastic array of wonderful languages that are spoken around Europe. We spent a little time trying to decipher some stickers with the equivalent of 'talk to me' written on them in various languages. It seems that everyone took a sticker that at least they could read! Some languages are not written with our alphabetic forms.
Anyway, a great day was had by all and we hope to collaborate further between schools and colleges, building awareness of our different languages and with that, cultures, traditions and opportunities to communicate and understand each other better. This broadens our outlook, making us more open to difference and more tolerant of one another.
All comments and suggestions welcome.
Best wishes
Jane Reed
Christmas 2010
More recently, we have been collaborating again with our European partners to offer information about our particular Christmas Festivities and how we celebrate them. It has been a really interesting project with many differing opinions being shown.
We intend to keep up the excellent work in the New Year.
Best wishes to everyone for 2011.

January 2010
On a recent trip to Spain, I saw preparations being made for the celebration of El Dia de los Reyes Magos, the day of the Three Kings. This is celebrated on 6th January and is Christmas Day in Spain. The shops were a marvel of toys, books, clothes and sweets, all being chosen by children of all ages as a gift from their parents. It was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay for the festivities as I had to get back for work! Sadly, my holidays are over!
Feliz Año Nuevo

View of the mall in La Cañada, Málaga
A recent excursion to Spain resulted in me taking these pictures of Los Tres Magos or the Three Kings. In Spain, Christmas Eve is the day for great family get-togethers and celebration. The children must wait until 5th January to receive gifts from their parents and from the Three Kings who parade through each town distributing boiled sweets to the waiting crowds. However, in this day and age and with so many other Europeans living in Spain, inlcuding the Brits, the 25th December is often celebrated by Spanish families too. Everything changes!
